As I’ve mentioned earlier in the week, today was Star Wars Reads Day and it was awesome! This was the second year for the event. For those who don’t know, Star Wars Reads Day is:
“Star Wars Reads Day is the kind of initiative that we at Lucasfilm love to support” says Carol Roeder, Director of Publishing at Lucasfilm. “Reading and Star Wars have gone hand-in-hand since 1976, when the novelization of the original Star Wars movie was released. Over the years, many fans have discovered the joy in reading through Star Wars books, and we hope to continue encouraging more people to read.”
This was my first time attending, and I attended the Star Wars Reads Day event at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Hosted for the first time by USF’s SOLIS (Student Organizations of Library Information Science) club in the CIS building, the event had free food, crafts, raffle prizes, sci-fi books to purchase or swap (I bought The Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Galaxy for 50 cents!), as well as video and card/table games, trivia, a costume contest, and an author panel. Members of the 501st Legion: Vader’s First were also in attendance (my sister was the Magma Trooper (the red one)).
The authors on the panel were Barbara L. Daniels Phillips, Alva Underwood, Cheri Roman, and John Hope. The panel was informative and interesting. The panelists gave great advice and I had the opportunity to speak to three of them and they gave me their cards.
After the event was over, my sis and I along with her 501st friends headed over to the nearby Taco Bus to eat. Folks I’m going to tell you right now, Taco Bell has got nothing on Taco Bus! I had a Burrito, a Taco, and a Soda and my goodness it was wonderful!
This was a great ending to a week which began with a painful ear infection. I hope you all enjoyed Star Wars Reads Day and for those who didn’t attend a local event, come out next year. You won’t regret it!
